Thanks for your feedback. The fact of the matter is that I met John, told him about this project and received his support. He maintained control over his interview and edited my edited transcript to be sure that what it contained was what he wanted "published". The book is not yet published, but is with two publishers so the copyright issue will be determined when it is published. As for the author, this is an oral history, like the ones of Studs Terkel, Chris Appy and others, so the words are Mr. Strickland's. He gave his permission for it to appear in my book, CALLED TO SERVE. I hope this answers your conundrums...

Very interesting! But ... he's no longer exactly "invisible." Does he know his story is now available to the entire world on the Internet? When will Charlie Rose be giving him a call to get out more of his story? When is the whole anthology going to be published? How much did you pay him to be in your book? Exactly who has the copyright to his story. You transcribed it but he composed it! Who's the "author" with authorial rights to this specific story? Just a few conundrums.
